Planning & Pre-Qualification
Why We Charge a Design Consultation Fee
A professional water feature consultation is more than an estimate. It is the first step in designing a pond, waterfall, or fountainscape that actually fits your property, your goals, and your budget.
When homeowners first contact us, one of the most common questions we receive is:
“Do you offer free estimates?”
The answer is yes. We are happy to speak with you by phone, learn about your project, and provide a rough budget range based on the information you share. There is no charge for that conversation.
However, if you would like us to visit your property, evaluate the site, discuss design possibilities, and develop recommendations for your project, we charge a design consultation fee.
The reason is simple:
A design consultation is much more than an estimate.
Every Property Is Different
No two yards are exactly alike. The size of the space, existing landscaping, drainage patterns, elevation changes, utility locations, access for construction, sunlight exposure, and viewing angles all influence the final design.
What works beautifully in one backyard may not be the best solution in another.
An on-site consultation allows us to evaluate your property and provide recommendations tailored specifically to your goals and your landscape.
You Are Not Paying for a Price
Many contractors can stop by, spend a few minutes looking around, and throw out a number.
That is not how we approach water feature design.
Our goal is to help you make informed decisions before construction ever begins. During a design consultation, we discuss how you want to use the space, what type of water feature best fits your property, potential locations and layouts, construction considerations, maintenance expectations, budget options, and long-term enjoyment.
The result is a better understanding of what is possible and what makes the most sense for your yard.
We Invest Time Before Construction Begins
A successful project starts long before the first shovel enters the ground.
After meeting with you, we review the information gathered during the consultation and prepare a fee proposal along with a rough order-of-magnitude budget for your project.
This process takes time, experience, and professional judgment. The consultation fee helps compensate for the planning work required to develop thoughtful recommendations rather than rushed estimates.
The Consultation Helps Prevent Expensive Mistakes
One of the biggest advantages of professional planning is avoiding problems before they happen.
During the consultation, we can identify concerns such as drainage issues, access limitations, utility conflicts, grade changes, space constraints, visibility concerns, and maintenance challenges.
Addressing these factors early often saves homeowners far more than the cost of the consultation itself.
The Fee Is Credited Toward Your Project
For homeowners who choose to move forward with us, the consultation fee is credited toward the cost of the project.
In other words, the consultation is not an additional charge on top of your project. It becomes part of the planning process that helps create a successful outcome.
What You Receive During a Design Consultation
When you schedule a design consultation, you receive a visit to your property, professional site evaluation, design recommendations, discussion of opportunities and challenges, answers to your questions, a project fee proposal, and a rough order-of-magnitude budget.
Most importantly, you gain clarity about what is possible for your property and what the next steps should be.
Our Goal Is to Help You Make the Right Decision
Whether you ultimately choose an ecosystem pond, a pondless waterfall, a fountainscape, or decide to wait until a future season, our goal is the same:
To provide professional guidance that helps you make the best decision for your property.
A design consultation is the first step in that process.

The consultation includes an on-site property evaluation, design recommendations, discussion of opportunities and challenges, answers to your questions, and a project fee proposal with a rough order-of-magnitude budget.

How long does a consultation take?
Most consultations last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the project.
Will I receive a final construction price during the consultation?
Not usually. During the consultation, we will discuss your goals, evaluate the site, and explore different design possibilities. Because the final price depends on factors such as the design, materials, site access, and overall project scope, we typically prepare your proposal after the consultation.
Following the visit, we will develop recommendations tailored to your property and provide a proposal that includes pricing for the work discussed. Whenever possible, we will also provide a rough budget range during the consultation so you can determine whether the project aligns with your investment goals.
